Quarterly inspection logbook for emergency-lighting compliance. SANS 10114-2 monthly functional tests + annual full-duration discharge.
What testing PAR requires
SANS 10114-2 requires monthly functional tests (briefly trigger emergency mode, verify the luminaire activates) and annual full-duration discharge tests (run the battery for the rated autonomy period). Both must be logged with date, fitting identifier, result, and any remedial action.
Inspector expectations
Under PAR, Department of Employment & Labour inspectors can ask to see the logbook on demand. Missing or sporadic entries indicate non-compliance even if the lighting is physically present. Keep the logbook with the OHS Act file at building reception.
Self-test luminaires + logbook
Self-test fittings (where the luminaire automatically runs its own test and signals failure via a status LED) reduce the manual logging burden but don't replace it. The logbook still records the date of the test and the result.
