SANS 10114-2
Interior lighting — Part 2: Emergency lighting. The South African design and installation standard for emergency lighting schemes.
What SANS 10114-2 requires
The standard sets minimum illuminance levels on escape routes (1 lux average, 0.5 lux minimum at floor level along the centreline), open-area anti-panic lighting (0.5 lux on the floor), and high-risk task-area lighting (10% of normal, minimum 15 lux). It also specifies exit sign placement — every change of direction, every emergency exit, viewing distance up to 30m.
Battery duration
Minimum 1 hour autonomy for standard occupancies. Longer (typically 3 hours) for buildings where evacuation may take longer — high-rise, healthcare, complex industrial. The duration starts the moment mains power fails.
Testing + logbooks
Monthly functional tests + annual full-duration discharge tests. Each test logged with date, result, and remedial action. Logbooks are part of OHS Act compliance — GELS provides a downloadable template at /specifiers/logbook.
